Overview of the River Nene Loop and Wetlands Tour
After some basic instruction on canoeing technique we will investigate the lock structures that allow canal boats to bypass the falling river, portaging around two locks in a man-made channel, which still gives the illusion of a natural river, before re-joining the old river course. We will continue through the flood plains, that provide sanctuaries and habitats for wildlife and birds, and which protect the industrial town of Wellingborough, situated several miles downstream, to the eastern end of the Northampton Washlands – a site of international importance for 20,000 over-wintering birds. We will alight to view the Sanctuary andstretch our legs before returning along the old river to the Centre.
